Topsoil Calculator
Calculate how much topsoil you need for your lawn project. Whether you are preparing for sod installation or building up garden beds, get the exact amount in cubic yards or bags.
How Much Topsoil Do I Need?
To calculate how much topsoil you need, multiply your area (in square feet) by your desired depth (in inches), then divide by 324 to get cubic yards. The formula is: Cubic Yards = (Area in sq ft × Depth in inches) ÷ 324.
For example, a 1,000 sq ft lawn at 4 inches deep requires approximately 12.3 cubic yards of topsoil.
How Deep Should Topsoil Be for Sod?
For laying sod, a depth of 4 inches of quality topsoil is recommended. This gives the sod roots enough depth to establish and access nutrients. If your existing soil is of good quality, 2-3 inches of topsoil may be sufficient as an amendment layer.
For garden beds, 6-12 inches is ideal to allow deep root growth for vegetables and flowers.
When buying topsoil, look for dark, crumbly material that smells earthy — not sour or chemical. Screened topsoil has been filtered to remove rocks, roots, and debris, making it ideal for sod preparation and garden beds. Unscreened topsoil is cheaper but may contain clumps and stones that create an uneven surface; it is better suited for filling low spots or large grading projects where you will be spreading a thick layer.
Soil Calculator — How Many Bags Make a Yard?
A cubic yard of topsoil equals 27 cubic feet. A standard bag of topsoil is 0.75 cubic feet, so you need 36 bags to equal one cubic yard. For projects larger than about 2 cubic yards, bulk delivery is almost always more practical and cost-effective than buying bags.
