How Much Mulch Do I Need?
To calculate how much mulch you need, use the formula: Cubic Yards = (Area in sq ft × Depth in inches) ÷ 324. For a typical garden bed of 500 square feet at 3 inches deep, you will need approximately 4.6 cubic yards of mulch, or about 62 bags (2 cubic feet each).
What Is the Ideal Mulch Depth?
Apply mulch at a depth of 3 to 4 inches for new applications. This depth suppresses weeds effectively while still allowing water to penetrate. For existing mulch, maintain the 3-4 inch depth by topping up annually as the organic material decomposes. Avoid letting mulch depth exceed 4 inches, as this can restrict oxygen to plant roots.
When choosing mulch, consider your goals: organic mulches like wood chips and shredded bark break down over time, improving soil structure and adding nutrients. Inorganic mulches like stone or rubber last indefinitely but do nothing for soil health — they are better suited for permanent pathways or decorative areas where you do not want annual replenishment.
As a rule of thumb, 2-3 inches is sufficient for most flower beds and ornamental plantings. Use 3-4 inches when weed suppression is a top priority, such as around trees or along fence lines. Never exceed 4 inches of mulch depth — too much mulch can suffocate plant roots by restricting oxygen exchange and can create a habitat for rodents and pests.
Mulch Coverage — Bags vs Bulk
A standard bag of mulch covers approximately 12 square feet at 2 inches deep, or 8 square feet at 3 inches deep. A cubic yard of mulch (27 cubic feet) covers approximately 108 square feet at 3 inches deep. For projects requiring more than 5 cubic yards, bulk delivery is typically more practical and cost-effective than purchasing individual bags.
